Tadoba is situated in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. Tadoba Tiger reserve was created in 1995. The Reserve is endowed with rich biodiversity and is famous for its natural heritage. The area of the Reserve is 625 sq. km. This includes Tadoba National Park, created in 1955 with an area of 117 sq. km. and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary created in 1986 with an area of 509 sq. km. Mohrali Gate is famous for wildlife viewing in Tadoba among four of its entrances. The rest of three are Zai, Navegaon & Pangadi. It is also referred to as “The Jewel of Vidharba”.
Avi – Fauna
The Avi-fauna of Tadoba comprises of about 200 bird species. Some of the prominent ones are Jungle fowl, Fishing Eagle, Paradise Fly-catcher, Indian Roller, Honey buzzard, Crested Serpent Eagle, Indian Pitta, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon etc.
Climate
Winter lasts from November to February and is one of the best times for a visit. Day temperatures range between 25-30 º C and the park is pleasantly green. Summers are unbearably hot in Tadoba, with day temperatures rising sometimes to 47 º C. However, it is the ideal time to view mammals near water sources, as vegetation is also scarce, enhancing visibility. Vegetation and insect life is at its best with the onset of rains in mid-June. Because of the dense growth of plants and grasses, animals are not easily sighted in this season.
Unlike other parks this park is open to visitors throughout the year.
Fauna
The mammals found in the Tadoda Tiger reserve are – Asiatic Bison (Indian Gaur), Wild Dog (Dholes), Tiger, Leopard, Striped Hyens, Four-horned Antelope, Jungle Cat, Sambhar and more. Among reptiles, Crocodiles is the major reptile species found in the Tadoba lake.
Flora
The forest has trees of Sal, Indian Butter Teak, Mahua, Mango, Black-plum, Bamboo, Bel, Casia, Flame of Forest, Terminenalia Hiwar, Margosa etc. Reserve is manifested with substantial forest intermingled with paddocks and regions materlizing scrub forest.
The forest is Tropical Dry deciduous type. Teak is the dominant species in this forest. Some of the major tree species found within the protected area are Teak, Ain, Arjun, Bamboo, Behada, Bel, Bija, Bhera, Bor, Chichwa, Dhawada, Kusum, Mahua, Mowai, Phetra, Rohan, Salai, Semal, Shisham, Shivan, Surya, Sirus, Tendu. Among mixed forest area, Bamboo occupies major share.
