Corbett National Park

The Corbett National Park is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in the state of Uttranchal in India. It was once a popular hunting ground of the British and was named so in honour of the late Jim Corbett, the legendary hunter of man eating tigers, a naturalist, author and photographer who spent most of his life here.It is India’s first national park and the first sanctuary to come under Project Tiger. The topography comprises of hilly areas, ravines, marshy depressions and plateaus.

Avi – Fauna

The Park has Spotted Eagles, Black throated Payas, Mynas, Indian Roller, Jungle Fowl, Vultures, Thrushes, Barbets, Peacocks, peahens, Herons, Darters, Chir Pheasants, Kalij Pheasants, Grebes, Grey Lags, Snipes, Harriers, Ospreys, Minivets, Babblers, Cormorants, Lapwings, Paradise Flycatchers, Munias, Weaver birds, Fishing eagles, Woodpeckers, Wagtails, Black winged Kits, Drongos, Doves, Plovers, Black necked Storks, Parakeets, Sarus Crane, Owls, Serpent eagles, Kingfishers, migrant Gulls, Moorhens, Ducks, Geese, Sandpipers, falcons, Nightjars, Cuckoos, Hornbills and Stone Curlews. Corbett has nearly 600 bird species officially recorded in it’s log books.

Climate

Temperature reach as low as 4 º C at night in the winter and as high as 44 º C in the summer. It receives a rainfall of 1400mm-2800mm. The park remains closed between June 16 and November 14 on account of the monsoons.



Fauna

Corbett is a tiger haven and its prey, which includes four kinds of Deer, Wild Boar and some lesser-known animals. This apart Elephants, Dholes, Civets, Mongooses, Otters, Hares, Porcupines, Chital (spotted deer), Sambar deer, Hog deer, Leopards, Jungle cats, Fishing Cats, Leopard cats, Himalayan black bears, Sloth bears, Jackals, Martens, Langurs, Blue Bulls (Nilgais) Barking deer, Ghorals, Wild Boars, Pangolins and Macaques, are some of the species are found here.

Reptiles such as Gharials, Mugger Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards, turtles, Cobras, Pythons and the Sal forest Tortoise are also seen.

Flora

A majority of the vegetation in Corbett consists of Sal trees (Shorea robusta), mainly in the lower regions. The higher region has a larger variety of plants and trees such as Chir, anauri) and Bakli. Also different varieties of bamboo are found in various parts of the forest.
